The Musicianship of Jazz

Welcome to the first installment of my written commentary and contribution. I’m glad we’re both here to talk about it all.

If you’ve been to a live Jazz Event, you’ll know exactly what I mean when I say that it’s easy to stand next to the stage in awe. Being a musician myself, it’s even more awe inspiring to watch the best of the best.

What I’m talking about is “The Musicianship of Jazz”: The players that bring it all together. The human clocks… The rhythm machines… The virtuosos. These artists can play it better, bigger, and longer than anyone else.

Just open your senses to the incredible blend of instrumental harmony… A place where every instrument meshes together to complete the puzzle…it’s a how-to lesson that you cannot buy the book for. Stand, sit, and watch it all. This is what “practice makes perfect” is all about.

True, many of these Modern Jazz Artist are rooted in Rock & Roll. But, they honed their craft in other mediums and brought their perfection to Jazz.

There is one thing you can always count on in the Jazz world: you’ll be hearing , watching and enjoying the finest musicians available. And I for one always look forward to the live shows. That’s where it all comes together!

When you look back on the roots of these players, you’ll see that they have spent a lifetime doing what they do. This is about total dedication to the music industry and to the art of music.

Many songs would only be mediocre if it were not for that special twist that a seasoned pro can add to it. That certain riff… that stretched e string… that whispering sax, or that tickling of the ivories, somewhere up high, for just an offbeat New York second.

It’s here that music can grow; where all the senses can bloom. Where the real world gets put on hold, and fantasy rules every mind it captures in the crowds. It’s been said that the destination isn’t worth much, unless the journey has been enjoyed.

Next time you’re there live … be sure to pay close attention. There’s a wonderful journey-taking place, cash in your ticket and climb on board!
